Settling in ...

I can gladly say that the jet lag is finally starting to go away! I went to the market (accompanied by my roommate for his excellent Japanese speaking skills) and was able to buy ingredients to make something similar to an American staple...The Japanese PB&J. With the help and kindness from my roommates and friends I am settling in well here. Thankfully, I am starting to get the train system down. Everyone takes the train, seems pointless to drive...and I love it. Imagine the Bart in San Francisco (which I think is fabulous) only the system in Japan is a million times safer and a million times cleaner. I could definitely get used to this. My roommate Yoshie took me around and I saw some interesting things...a sort of area within a mall with people selling items or performing, little independent types of businesses. A Venice Beach type of concept only no beach...and cold. It's strange because to me, although I have yet to explore many parts of Japan, it seems as though it is like a parallel universe to the life in America. Getting on the train...I see the same types of people, only they are Japanese and the language is different, but the everyday routine of things really isn't that different. Obviously, there are different beliefs and customs but in the city, it all seems very relative. I am excited for the culture shock when I get to see the real traditional areas in the country side of Japan.
PB&J? Almost, that's not real peanut butter...I don't really know what it is.
